Privacy is a Human Right

Privacy is a Human Right

Article 12 of the United Nations’ Declaration of Human Rights outlines privacy rights as a Human Right since 1948.

Article 12.

No one shall be subjected to arbitrary interference with his privacy, family, home or correspondence, nor to attacks upon his honour and reputation. Everyone has the right to the protection of the law against such interference or attacks.

United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, 1948.

Privacy is the right to keep our information private and control who can access it. Therefore any interference with this right would violate our human rights.

Why is privacy an area of concern if it is a Human Right?

When you sign up to different platforms or for various services, you agree to their terms and services – the legal document that is essentially pages and pages long that no one reads. In the terms and services, you agree to terms allowing them to access, collect, and sell your information.

For example, YouTube’s Terms and Services outline that they can use your information for marketing purposes. Additionally, your deleted videos are not deleted and could be stored anywhere in the world.

And Google Play uses information like apps you’ve already installed and videos you’ve watched on YouTube to suggest new apps you might like. Depending on your settings, we may also show you personalized ads based on your interests.
